Hikes are canceled if it rains. There are no hikes on holidays. Bring water, snack, lug soles shoes, hat, and sunscreen. No hiking in the summer-early fall due to hot weather.

We'll be going up to the caves and the area above the train tunnel. Among other things, we'll see the Chatsworth Park North gate into the SSPSHP!

Some of the State Park volunteers have planned some hikes in the next few weeks.  Please considering joining one (or more!) of them and learning more about your local State Park. Additional hikes are being planned, so more emails may be coming your way!

   

GENERAL HIKING INFO

-- bring plenty of water, hat, sunscreen

-- wear appropriate shoes and clothing  (NOTE: Some of the areas where these hikes are headed have ticks and poison oak, so dress accordingly)

-- there are no restroom facilities on park property

-- all minors must be accompanied by a responsible adult

-- well-behaved dogs on leash are welcome

-- free and open to the public

DRIVING DIRECTIONS

Take the 118 Freeway to the Topanga Canyon Boulevard exit. Proceed south on Topanga Boulevard approximately one mile. Turn right (west) on Devonshire, proceed half a mile, and turn left on  Larwin Avenue which is the last street before Devonshire ends.  The park entrance is on the right under the power lines.  Parking is along the residential street.

 Stagecoach Trail

 Meet 9:00 AM on the third Sunday of each month from November through June. No hiking in the summer-early fall due to hot weather. Interpretative hike into history of Santa Susana Pass State Historic Park. Hike is a 3 to 4-1/2 mile loop (400' gain) up the historic Stagecoach Trail. Directions: From Topanga Cyn. Blvd., turn West on Devonshire St. then South on Larwin Avenue. Go about 200 feet and park under the power lines.

Sun, Feb 5 Vasquez Rocks 9AM 

Easy 3-4 mi stroll among rocks carved by wind and rain, once a hideout for the infamous outlaw Tiburcio Vasquez. Meet 9 AM at entrance to Vasquez Park on street. Take I-5 N to 14 Fwy N, exit Aqua Dulce Rd. N and follow signs. Bring water and snacks. Serious rain cancels.

Sun, Feb 19 Elsmere Canyon Loop 9AM 

3 mi, 500’ gain hike on a new trail in historic canyon that was saved from becoming a landfill. Several small stream crossings. Meet 9 AM at south end of Newhall Ave in Santa Clarita. Take I-5 to 14 Fwy N, exit Newhall Ave, R to carpool area. Bring water and snacks. Rain cancels.

Sun, Feb 26 Placerita Canyon 8-mile Loop 9AM 

Moderate 8 mi loop, 1600’ gain in the western end of the San Gabriel Mts. Ascend steep climb along ridge and hillside for excellent views of Santa Clarita and San Fernando Valleys and then descend via the Los Pinetos and Canyon Trails. Meet 9 AM at Placerita Canyon Nature Center. Take I-5 N to 14 Fwy N, exit Placerita Cyn Rd, go R 1.5 mi to park entrance. Meet in front of nature center. Bring water, lunch, and lug soles. Rain cancels.

 Rocky Peak

      Sunday evenings meet at 4 PM at the Rocky Peak trailhead at the end of Rocky Peak road on the Santa Susana Pass. (Meet at 5 PM during daylight savings time) Strenuous – 4.8 miles round trip.

Long Canyon

   Tusday evenings meet at 6:30 PM in Long Canyon parking lot. Directions: In Simi Valley, take First Street South. Continue when the road’s name changes to Long Canyon Road. The parking lot is at the intersection of Long Canyon Road and Wood Ranch Parkway. Easy to Moderate – 3.0 miles round trip.

The Chumash Trail

 Thursday evenings meet at 6:00 PM at the Chumash trailhead. Directions: Take 118 Freeway to Yosemite exit. Go North on Yosemite and turn right on Flanagan Dr. The trailhead is at the end of Flanagan Drive. Moderate to Strenuous – 5.2 miles round trip. 

    No Dogs Allowed at this event.

February 4th 

Backbone Trail Part 1:    Ray Miller Trailhead to the Big Sycamore Canyon Trailhead Shuttle*  

9.8 Miles - (1,086' elevation gain) - Moderate to Strenuous 

Meet at 8 AM near Donut Delite at the corner of Madera and Royal. Please remember, this hike requires ample shuttle cars, so be prepared to drive your car from Donut Delite to both the beginning and ending trailheads in Mugu State Park. The parking fee is $10 at Big Sycamore Canyon Campground parking lot. The parking fee is $5 at La Jolla Canyon parking lot. Parking fees will be shared between everyone in attendance. Shuttle car driving directions will be distributed at Donut Delite. Bring 2 - 3 quarts of water and lunch. Wear sturdy boots.

12.5 Miles - (900' elevation gain - 3,000' elevation loss) - Moderate to Strenuous 

Meet at 8 AM near Donut Delite at the corner of Madera and Royal. Please remember, this hike requires ample shuttle cars, so be prepared to drive your car from Donut Delite to both the beginning and ending trailheads. The parking fee is $10 at Big Sycamore Canyon Campground parking lot. There is no parking fee at the Mishe Mokwa trailhead. Parking fees will be shared between everyone in attendance. Shuttle car driving directions will be distributed at Donut Delite. Bring 2 - 3 quarts of water and lunch. Wear sturdy boots.
